Voting is not an option

People in other nations are dying in the street for the right to a fair vote. In America eligible non-voters are given a flippant “If you don’t vote you can’t complain.” slap on the wrist. It’s not enough. Voting is not an option, it’s a duty.

It’s important for every Civil Citizen to know about talking points. Talking points are specific points that a politician, political party or special interest group wants you to know. Like an advertisement there are varying levels of truth to these statements. We have seen some masters of the talking point, I must say many from the Republican Party.

With the July 4th holiday last weekend I thought about America. What is it about America? What does America promise citizens and people all over the world that take a chance and come to try their luck at the American Dream?America promises nothing, sometimes nothing can be a good thing.

There are many people who hold leadership roles in communities and organizations. Some are really good at what they do. Yet, anyone who has interacted in these circles will soon discover that there are two types of people involved in boards and commissions. The activist who is very engaged and puts everything into the endeavor and all too common the people who are in it for the title and the boost that gives to their resume.

Community events like a neighborhood crime watch meeting, a block party , or other neighborhood meetings take an important part in creating a feeling of community. Community members look out for one another, come together for fellowship and on occasion to solve a problem the community faces together.

As Civil Citizens there are many times people find themselves looking around in a panicked outrage crying “Who will fix this?”, “Who will stand up for the outrage?”! The answer is many times “No one.” The trick is it only takes one person to get the ball rolling. Are you the someone to stand up and be a change-maker?

A PAC or Political Action Committee is a fund collected by a company or organization specifically for the purpose of having monetary influence on campaigns. Although much has been said about the influence of Labor Union PACs not much is said about the fact that many corporations, including utility companies and others have such PACs.

Freedom isn’t free. This saying is primarily attached to military service. However there is much more to it. Civil Citizen’s must pay for Democracy with time, attention and yes, sometimes money. In order to take away the power of special interest lobbyists the people as a whole must contribute at least as much as the special interests do.
